Online trafficking is the use of digital platforms like social media, websites, online advertisements, and fake job portals to target and exploit individuals which leads to misleading victims through false promises of employment, financial opportunities, or personal relationships. Thus, victims may face sexual exploitation, forced labour, or other forms of abuse.
How does Online Trafficking happen?
Traffickers often use digital platforms to target potential victims through various ways such as:
- Creating fake job opportunities with attractive salaries.
- Posing as friends, romantic partners, or other trusted persons by creating fake social media accounts and using online messaging applications and social media platforms to target vulnerable individuals.
- Using artificial intelligence (AI) to create fake profiles and realistic content, making it easier to mislead victims and hide criminal activities.
- Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and anonymous accounts help traffickers hide their identities and locations, making it harder to detect and stop them.
Reporting Mechanisms of Online Trafficking
Report to Authorities
If online trafficking is suspected, quick reporting can help stop exploitation and protect victims. The steps below explain how to report it and get support.
Step I: Before reporting, save important evidence like screenshots, messages, social media profiles, phone numbers, transaction records, photos, videos, etc, to help investigations.
Step II: Victims or witnesses can report through government cybercrime portals by submitting details of the incident with evidence.
Contact Helplines
Contact helplines for quick help. They guide you on how to report the issue, connect you with the right authorities, and provide emergency support. In India, you can call the cybercrime helpline number 1930.
Approach Law Enforcement Authorities
Complaints can also be filed at the nearest police station or cybercrime unit, to investigate the case.
Support from Organizations Against Online Trafficking
Victims of online trafficking can seek assistance from NGOs and support organizations, which provide legal aid, including coordination with legal authorities, as well as psychological support.
Prevention and Safety Measures Against Online Trafficking
